Healthy Kids Running Series Comes to Town from the Sentinel

Written by  Peter Rouleau

ROCKVILLE — The Healthy Kids Running Series, a national non-profit designed to promote healthy lifestyles and to combat childhood obesity, is now active in Montgomery County.

Founded in 2009 in West Chester, Pennsylvania by Jeff Long, founder and president of Pattinson Sports Group, HKRS now operates in over 200 communities nationwide.

Once a week for five weeks, children run races, ranging from 50 yards for two and three-year-olds to one mile for fourth and fifth graders and middle school students.  Points are awarded based on finishing times, and the end of the series, the runners who have earned the most points for their finish times receive trophies for their divisions. Every runner is also given a participation medal and gift bag at the end of each race.
